Google Maps Class, Desert Sunsets and Annual Convergence

January 15-21, 2019 — For years we dreaded the arctic chill, blustery winds and perpetual darkness that defined the month of January. For us the only highlights of the cold and snowy new year were football playoffs and, if lucky, a vacation for a week somewhere warm. Fast forward to our full-time RV life and the month has easily become one of our favorite times of the year.

So what is the draw for January? Life in the Arizona desert under gorgeous sunrises and sunsets with friends. It’s a time of sharing, learning and teaching, a time to rest and recharge, and a time to reflect on past travels and plan for future explorations.

All nights this week were free stays boondocking on BLM land near Quartzsite, Arizona.

Like our beautiful Arizona desert view? It really does rain at times and when it does, watch out for flash floods.

Our parking spot on Plomosa Road BLM north of Quartzsite, Arizona. Here we joined our friends Pat & Ellen (@rolling_along_country_roads), Wes & Kelley (@roadhoundadventures),  Mike & Joie (@ourmobilebackpack), and Nancy & Al (@imagineourrvdreams). Later in the week we were also joined by Cory & Teri (@dreammachinego). Fun with friends in the desert!

Road trip time to Parker, Arizona to restock on groceries and supplies at Safeway and Walmart. The Walmart parking lot looked more like an RV park than a store. What a zoo!

The late afternoon sun shining on the mountains and saguaro cactus with dark clouds in the sky. What an interesting contrast! This is our view out of the RV at our BLM boondocking site in Quartzsite, Arizona. Love the desert!

The sunsets in the Arizona desert are stunning. Every one is beautiful yet so unique. Don’t think we’ll ever get tired of watching them. Below are three photos taken within minutes of each other in the same location. Amazing how fast the skies change.

Part of the draw to Quartzsite, Arizona each January is the annual convergence of others like RV clubs, owner’s groups, bloggers, YouTubers, etc. It’s a great platform to find like-minded nomads to forge friendships with, exchange knowledge and just enjoy each others’ company. Here we are pictured with Paul and Lorena from The Motorhome Experiment YouTube channel at their meet and greet. What a fun couple!

Live music in the Arizona desert compliments of our friends and neighbors David & Brenda Bott (@outsideourbubble) and @notesfromneptune. Good times and great music!

Spending time on a Sunday afternoon in the Arizona desert teaching a Google Maps class to our group. Learning can be fun!

Where’d We Stay 2018. Developing a map like the one below was part of the course curriculum in the Google Maps class we taught to our group. Each map pin indicates an overnight stay and the type of site it was.

We are loving our time in the desert and are looking forward to another week of the same. Stay tuned for next week to see what fun and exciting things we find to do. See you then!
