Bacon, Apples and Orange Barrels

May 15 -21, 2018 — The third week of May started in Indiana and ended unexpectedly in Wisconsin. We had originally planned to spend the entire week in northern Indiana but obligations dictated for us to return to our home state of Wisconsin abruptly. The beauty of being a full-time RVer is that our home is on wheels and we can pack up and go whenever and wherever we are needed. All nights this week were spent boondocking at free sites.

A twenty five foot tall sculpture based on the American Gothic painting in Elkhart, Indiana’s Central Park. The sculpture by artist Seward Johnson weights in at 27,000 pounds.

Harvest Hosts is a network of wineries, farms and attractions that invite self-contained RVers to visit and stay overnight. Since starting our journey we have enjoyed the hospitality of many of these locations.

The Riverwalk in Elkhart, Indiana. It is an asphalt multi-purpose trail just shy of a mile long that follows along the Elkhart River.

The city of Elkhart, Indiana wanted to do something to disguise the old green traffic light boxes scattered throughout the downtown area. The result was colorful wraps that promote areas and events in Elkhart such as the Botanical Gardens, Railroad Museum and the Midwest Museum of Modern Art. Always nice when a city can turn eye-sores into works of art.

This turkey was among a few dozen animals that live at a garden center in Elkhart, Indiana. This one was quite a ham for the camera.

Even though we don’t have a yard anymore we still like looking around at garden centers. This one was in Elkhart, Indiana.

Giant apple sculptures line the streets of Nappanee, Indiana as the city proudly claims the apple as it’s favorite fruit. Each September an Apple Festival is held in the city attracting 80,000+ attendees.

While searching for the apple sculptures in Nappanee, Indiana we came across a local meat market. We purchased a package of the $2.49 per pound bacon ends that had the most amazing flavor. Yum!!

Thor Motor Coach headquarters are in Elkhart, Indiana. Even though we have toured several of their plants in the past we still had to do at least one tour while in the area.

Inside the Thor Motor Coach plant in Elkhart, Indiana where the Vegas and Axis are made. Tours are usually not available in this plant but the company graciously provided us a private visit of the facility.

This huge warehouse in South Bend, Indiana is one of several Lippert Component, Inc. facilities in northern Indiana. Lippert is the leading supplier of OEM and aftermarket parts for recreational vehicles. We stopped for a tour of their facility and giant warehouse. Can you see the forklift at the end of the walkway?

This Class C RV is under construction at the Nexus RV factory in Elkhart, Indiana. The company also makes Class A & B RVs.

Apparently geese in Indiana don’t follow the crosswalk rules.

Chicago traffic on a dreary weekend afternoon. Not our idea of fun.

Welcome to Wisconsin. Home of more orange construction barrels than people and cows combined.

Despite the unexpected schedule change it is still nice to be back in Wisconsin for a few weeks. Stay tuned to next week as we reflect back on a few favorite photographs from the area.
