Baby Bison, Rabbit Hash and Milking Robots

May 1-7, 2018 — We continued our journey north this week starting in Clarksville, Tennessee and ending up just north of Cincinnati in West Chester Township, Ohio. We drove almost 400 miles in the RV, more than our average miles, but some weeks are like that. All of our overnight stays were spent at free boondocking spots with four nights at Harvest Hosts locations, two nights at a casino and one night at a Cabela’s. We had great experiences with all the stays and are especially grateful for having solar power and a cellular signal booster to make these boondocking stays comfortable.

Always have your camera ready when traveling as you never know what you might find. Seeing a pink elephant usually refers to drinking too much causing drunken hallucinations but we assure you that we were perfectly sober when we came across this fellow along the road in Kentucky.

Awww. We instantly made friends with our new neighbor at a Harvest Hosts dairy farm and cheese factory location in Kentucky.

These cows are being milked by robots and enter the milking area independently on their own schedule. Happy cows equal higher milk production and better herd health. The farm milked 110 cows with these two robots.

The milk from the cows was processed into cheese at the farm. There’s nothing like fresh cheese curds straight out of the vat. Yes, we ate too many….

The view out our front window while at a Harvest Hosts location in Kentucky. It was tough to leave this beautiful peaceful place.

Our next stop was at a distillery in Kentucky that produces Bourbon, Whiskey and Moonshine. The distillery is a Harvest Hosts location which provides members like ourselves free overnight parking.

Looks like we upgraded our cell booster!! This was our parking spot at the Harvest Hosts distillery which had a cell tower nearby giving the illusion of the tower being a part of our RV.

The gravesite of Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken, in Louisville, Kentucky. “Colonel” status is not related to a military ranking but is the highest title of honor bestowed by the Commonweath of Kentucky. Sanders was commissioned as a Colonel in 1935 and again in 1950. Interestingly, Sanders franchised his secret recipe “Kentucky Fried Chicken” for the first time in South Salt Lake, Utah.

Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. We had to drive by and take a picture while in Louisville but did not visit as we have been there in the past.

Our third Harvest Hosts location of the week. This was a beautiful farm, restaurant, farm market and gift shop located in southern Indiana. It was a great overnight spot but the rural roads near the farm are not for the faint of heart as they are narrow, curvy, hilly and have no shoulders.

We made new friends at this Harvest Hosts location as well. They followed us everywhere as we walked around the farm hoping we would give them a handout.

Quite an interesting name of a State Historic Site and State Park. The name refers to the Pleistocene megafauna fossils found there. The park features a small herd of bison that is maintained on site.

A one day old Bison and his mama grazing at Big Bone Lick State Park. Two more bison babies born within the month were also present in the herd.

Our next stop was in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky where the General Store pictured below has been in business since 1831. The name Rabbit Hash is said to have originated during the flood of 1847 when the abundant local rabbit population was driven to higher ground and became a food staple in a stew called “hash”.

Rabbit Hash is a very popular lunch and rest stop for bikers out enjoying the curvy hilly Kentucky countryside.

Rabbit Hash also offered yummy free wine tasting. All of the offerings were very good with our favorite being the Talon Afterglow semi-sweet wine which is made in nearby Lexington, Kentucky.

Switzerland county in southeastern Indiana claim to fame is being the Birthplace of American Commercial Wine Making. Who Knew?

Belterra Casino in Florence, Indiana provides free overnight RV parking. We enjoyed a quiet, peaceful stay there.

Chateau Laroche castle in Loveland, Kentucky. Check out our post on the medieval castle here!

The first week of May was another great week in our full-time RV travel adventure. Stay tuned for next week as we continue our travels north to take in several factory tours, wineries, and a museum.
