Costs of Full-Time RVing – June 2018

The overall costs of living and traveling in an RV can vary greatly depending on where you are, the activities you are doing, repair costs, your personal spending habits, etc. The variability is essentially the same regardless of your chosen housing arrangement. We track our spending via the free app “PERSONAL CAPITAL” and publicly share it to help others estimate their potential expenses for life on the road.

Sign up for a FREE Personal Capital account, link your first account and receive a FREE $20 Amazon Gift Card. Members typically see their reward within 24-48 hours. Click here for more details.

Our expenses are posted by month and year. They include all of our costs for two adults except for health insurance as it is such a varied expense depending on your job status, age, location, income, etc. Our cost of this insurance has no relevance to anyone else so we are choosing to leave it out of the spreadsheet.

You can check our previous monthly costs here.

*Note – Includes all expenses incurred except for health insurance which we wish the details to remain private.

Campground Fees –  The $60 was for four nights spent at a casino that offers sites with electricity while Wisconsin was experiencing temperatures in the 90’s. Having the comfort of air conditioning was well worth the $15 per night expense. The rest of the month was spent boondocking at a casino, Cabela’s, Walmart and at the homes of friends and family.

Communication – Verizon phone plan shared with family, unlimited data plan with AT&T and UPS mail box along with the expense of replacing a phone that experienced a hardware issue.

Entertainment – Expenses included a parking fee while in Appleton, Wisconsin and entrance for three adults ($15 pp) to the Green Bay Packer Hall of Fame.

Food – Includes all food, alcohol and restaurant expenses. We ate one meal out by ourselves and also treated friends to a meal and drinks for a total of $38.26. The remaining $221.89 was for food purchased at grocery stores and specialty retailers like wineries, cheese stores and farmer’s markets.

Gas -Car – Total miles driven in the Kia Soul for the month was 1,081.

Gas -RV – Total miles driven in the Thor Vegas RV was 680. Fuel is also used to operate the on-board generator.

General – Expenses included clothing, a haircut and miscellaneous household items such as toiletries, paper products and cleaning supplies.

Laundry – No expenses this month as laundry was done at a family member’s home.

License/Insurance – Full-time RV and tow vehicle insurance and licensing. Insurance for our Kia increased by $28 for a six month policy covering 6/30-12/30/2018.

Medical/Dental – Fees included medical expenses not covered by insurance.

RV/Auto – Expenses were for maintenance and upgrade supplies including oil for the generator, Camco Tornado Rotary Tank Rinser, hose and brass quick connects for the Tornado, Oxygenics Shower head, shut off valve, water bandit, 30 amp female replacement receptacle (used to repurpose an old cord into an extension cord), screen door crossbar handle, and drawer slides used to build a pantry drawer in the closet.

Camco RV Tornado Rotary Tank Rinser with Hose helps to reach every area of your holding tank. This permanent tank rinser with 360° rotating head and multiple high-pressure nozzles is the easiest, most sanitary way to clean your holding tank. No need for hoses through the windows or devices stuck down toilets. Includes a backflow preventer and 6′ exterior access hose for quick hose connection with no mess.

  1. I see many people on facebook groups say that it’s more expensive for them to RV than live in a house. I just don’t see how. I mean I guess it happens depending on where you’re camping and what you’re doing. But look at your campground fees. Almost $500 for HALF THE YEAR! I pay 5x that amount in a monthly mortgage. Once we get this house sold, we’ll be debt free and be spending a TON less than we currently do.

    1. We find this lifestyle to be much cheaper than living in our former house. Our campground expenses are less than what we used to pay just for property taxes. Our food and household expenses are slightly higher in the RV as we do shop and cook differently with having limited space. Overall we likely are eating better as we shop more frequently and eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Good luck on the sale of your house!
