George Strait and the Oldest Dance Hall in Texas

Gruene Hall is the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas. It was built in 1878 by Heinrich D. Gruene (pronounced green) in Gruene, TX which is now a part of New Braunfels, TX. It is a 6,000 square foot dance hall with a tin roof and flap sides that allows for open air dancing in conjunction with the outdoor garden. It’s appearance is much the same as it was when first opened.

Gruene Hall is an internationally recognized tourist attraction and major music venue for both up-and-coming artists and established artists. It has hosted acts such as Willie Nelson, Garth Brooks, BB King, Merle Haggard, Gregg Allman, Arlo Guthrie and many more.

George Strait and his Ace in the Hole Band played monthly at Gruene Hall in the late 1970’s.

The Hall was used as a set for the film “Michael” starring John Travolta.

Travis Tritt filmed his 1990 music video “Put More Drive in My Country” at the hall.

Nolan Ryan celebrated his 50th birthday at Gruene Hall with Neal McCoy providing the entertainment.

Music continues to be played at Gruene Hall every week. Some shows are free while others range in price from $12-25 a ticket. Many entertainers including LeeAnn Womack, Maren Morris and Three Dog Night are sold out weeks prior to the show.

Walking through Gruene Hall and seeing the multitude of photos on the walls was a nostalgic memorable experience. It is a definite must-see when in the Austin/San Antonio/New Braunfels area.
