We Eat All We Can and Sell the Rest

In 1907 a group of businessmen in Brenham, Texas established the Brenham Creamery Company to make butter from excess cream brought in by local farmers. A few years later the company started making and delivering ice cream via horse and wagon.

Since 1919 the company has been operated by the Kruse family. The statue below features E. F. Kruse (right), and sons Howard (left) and Ed (center).

In 1930 the company changed its name to Blue Bell Creameries after the native Texas bluebell.

Butter was produced until 1958 when Blue Bell began full time focus on the production of ice cream.

Today Blue Bell distributes ice cream to 19 states in the southern United States. It is the fourth largest ice cream brand in the country and number one among Texans. They love their Blue Bell!

Blue Bell Creamery headquarters remain in Brenham, Texas. The facility has a visitor’s center, observation room where you can see the ice cream being made and an ice cream parlor.

The parlor offers scoops of ice cream for $1 each with 16 flavors available during our visit. We chose strawberry cheesecake and butter crunch. Both were excellent.

Blue Bell has another manufacturing facility and ice cream parlor in Sylacauga, AL which we visited in October 2017. We enjoyed strawberry and butter crunch ice cream there as well.

We highly enjoyed our visit to Blue Bell Creamery. The observation window is open for viewing only during production times while the parlor has extended hours. The visitor’s center and observation window are free. Blue Bell is a definite highlight to any trip to the Brenham, Texas area.
